An activist was designated as a terror suspect, put on a watchlist and arrested, ostensibly it seems to prevent him attending a protest at this week's Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Charlotte resident and activist James Tyson was arrested on Sunday after his name showed up on a terror watchlist -- conveniently just days before the start of the DNC which is being held at three different locations this week in Charlotte. Tyson's attorney Derek Fletcher revealed to WSOCTV that "prosecutors tried to get the judge to keep him behind bars during the Democratic National Convention." Tyson's bond was initially set at a whopping $10,000 dollars before Fletcher was able to convince the judge to reduce the figure, after which Tyson was released on bail. The case represents a shocking example of how paranoia over terrorism is being hijacked to denounce legitimate demonstrators as extremists while discouraging others from exercising their right to free speech. TAMPA, Florida -- It's a debate going on in the Tampa Bay area and around the country: police vs. the public. Should people be allowed to videotape cops doing their jobs? A growing number of people, including a college student in Tarpon Springs, have been arrested recently for doing it. But the problem is, it's not illegal. Previous Story: College student arrested after video taping police A U.S. Court of Appeals has now affirmed that with a ruling, saying filming cops in a public place is your right, protected by the First Amendment, regardless of what an officer tells you. But why are some cops so camera shy? Brian Kensel, a retired FBI agent, who teaches at St. Leo University, says officers may be worried about who's behind the lens and what their motivation is. He also points out if a photographer gets too close, it can be a distraction, causing a danger to them and the officer. "It's not so much the videotaping itself as the involvement of a third party into this interaction that the officer is having," Kensel explained. Kensel compares it to the concern officers had when dashcams were originally put in squad cars. He expects they'll eventually get used to being videotaped by the public, just like with dashcams. "With all this new technology, people have to change their attitudes and change the way they do business," Kensel said. The hacktivist group Anonymous attacked and took offline the Federal Trade Commission's website yesterday in protest against the treaty, which was also the subject of demonstrations across major cities in Poland, a country set to sign the agreement today. Under the provisions of ACTA, copyright holders will be granted sweeping direct powers to demand ISPs remove material from the Internet on a whim. Whereas ISPs normally are only forced to remove content after a court order, all legal oversight will be abolished, a precedent that will apply globally, rendering the treaty worse in its potential scope for abuse than SOPA or PIPA. A country known for its enforcement of harsh Internet censorship policies like China could demand under the treaty that an ISP in the United States remove content or terminate a website on its server altogether. But when the web-domain registrar decided to support the Stop Online Piracy Act -- or SOPA -- it needed more than parade of bodacious babes to distract angry customers. Mass boycotts ran amok, threats from Anonymous piled on and customers began threatening to pull their domains from the service. Ben Huh, CEO of Cheezburger, a company which runs a host of humor web sites, threaten to move over a thousand domains from Go Daddy. And when Reddit and Wikipedia started making similar threats, Go Daddy finally caved late Friday. TIME has the company's statement. "Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation--but we can clearly do better ... Go Daddy is rooted in the idea of First Amendment Rights and believes 100 percent that the Internet is a key engine for our new economy." A writer for Inquisitr questions why Go Daddy supported SOPA in the first place. "The fact that GoDaddy -- a company whose bread and butter is largely dependent on the free and open web -- supported the internet killing legislation was kind of surprising in some ways ... but not so much in others (the company has shown a relatively large disregard to customer sentiment in the past...)" So is this a win for the SOPA opponents? ComputerWorld says -- not really. "SOPA still has strong support in Congress and among companies in several U.S. industries. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, one of the driving forces behind the bill, has said that more than 400 organizations have voiced support." Even so, it hasn't stopped the denizens of the web from celebrating. Gizmodo writes... "If a sleazeball company like Go Daddy can ditch SOPA because of pressure from the Internet, you bet other companies currently supporting SOPA will cave too. Let yourself be heard and let's freaking kill this bill." On the other hand--Bloomberg is taking a more 'wait and see' approach, considering that Congress is no longer in session. Male Anchor: "It's been a tempest in our teapot for a while here. I expect to hear about this more going forward. Cuz it is really a ... you the two worlds of Bloomberg are colliding, right? It's the copyright holders and big media companies the Comcast and the Time Warners fighting against the Googles... the Twitters... and the Facebooks... and those other companies that we cover so much." Female Anchor: "It will be really interesting to see what happens when congress comes back in session in January."

democracynow.org - Congressional support for a pair of anti-piracy bills is weakening after Wednesday's historic online protest in which thousands of websites went dark for 24 hours. Hollywood film studios, music publishers and major broadcasters support the anti-piracy legislation, saying it aims to stop the piracy of copyrighted material over the internet on websites based outside the United States. "We're talking about sites that are operated and dedicated to piracy and that are really preventing individual creators across the country from having an economic livelihood from their creative pursuits," says Sandra Aistars, Executive Director of the Copyright Alliance, whose members include the Motion Picture Association of America, NBC Universal, Time Warner, Viacom, ASCAP and BMI. But critics say the bills could profoundly change the internet by stifling innovation and investment, hallmarks of the free, open internet. "Wikipedia can be defined as a search engine under these [bills]," says Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales. "That would mean it would be illegal for Wikipedia to link to a site, even if we are explaining to the public what is going on here. That would become illegal. This is outrageous. It's not acceptable under the First Amendment." This is an urgent emergency alert to all people of the United States. The day we've all been waiting for has unfortunately arrived. The United States is censoring the internet. Our blatant response is that we will not sit while our rights are taken away by the government we trusted them to preserve. This is not a call to arms, but a call to recognition and action! The United States government has mastered this corrupt way of giving us a false sense of freedom. We think we are free and can do what we want, but in reality we are very limited and restricted as to what we can do, how we can think, and even how our education is obtained. We have been so distracted by this mirage of freedom, that we have just become what we were trying to escape from. For too long, we have been idle as our brothers and sisters were arrested. During this time, the government has been scheming, plotting ways to increase censorship through means of I S P block aides, D N S blockings, search engine censorship, website censorship, and a variety of other methods that directly oppose the values and ideas of both Anonymous as well as the founding fathers of this country, who believed in free speech and press! The United States has often been used as an example of the ideal free country. When the one nation that is known for its freedom and rights start to abuse its own people, this is when you must fight back, because others are soon to follow. Do not think that just because you are not a United States citizen, that this does not apply to you. You cannot wait for your country to decide to do the same. You must stop it before it grows, before it becomes acceptable. You must destroy its foundation before it becomes too powerful. Has the U.S. government not learned from the past? Has it not seen the 2011 revolutions? Has it not seen that we oppose this wherever we find it and that we will continue to oppose it? Obviously the United States Government thinks they are exempt. This is not only an Anonymous collective call to action. What will a Distributed Denial of Service attack do? What's a website de face ment against the corrupted powers of the government? No. This is a call for a worldwide internet and physical protest against the powers that be. Spread this message everywhere. We will not stand for this! Tell your parents, your neighbors, your fellow workers, your school teachers, and anyone else you come in contact with. This affects anyone that desires the freedom to browse anonymously, speak freely without fear of retribution, or protest without fear of arrest. Go to every I R C network, every social network, every online community, and tell them of the atrocity that is about to be committed. If protest is not enough, the United States government shall see that we are truly legion and we shall come together as one force opposing this attempt to censor the internet once again, and in the process discourage any other government from continuing or trying. We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive censorship. We do not forget the denial of our free rights as human beings. To the United States government, you should've expected us.
